(CBS/AP) WikiLeaks' chief claims his organization doesn't know who sent it some 91,000 secret U.S. military documents, telling journalists that the website is set up to hide the source of its data from those who receive it.
Editor-in-chief Julian Assange says the added layer of secrecy helps protect the site's sources from spy agencies and hostile corporations. He acknowledged that the site's anonymous submissions raised concerns about the authenticity of the material, but said the site has not yet been fooled by a bogus document.
Assange made the claim in a lengthy hour talk before London's Frontline Club late Tuesday, in which he outlined the workings of WikiLeaks and defended its mission.
Meanwhile, a Pentagon investigation will determine whether criminal charges will be filed in the leaking of the Afghanistan war secrets, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday.
Holder, speaking to reporters during a visit to Egypt, said the Justice Department is working with the Pentagon-led investigation to determine the source of the leak.
"I deplore the release of classified information. It is not really in the national interest of the United States to have that kind of material leaked," Holder said.
"The Justice Department is working with the Department of Defense with regard to an investigation concerning who the source of that leak, or the source of those leaks might be," he said. "Whether there will be criminal charges brought will depend on how the investigation goes."
Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said Tuesday that the Defense Department has launched a "very robust investigation" into the leak of secret documents on the war in Afghanistan published Sunday by WikiLeaks, an online site.
The WikiLeaks material ranges from files documenting Afghan civilian deaths to evidence of U.S.-Pakistani distrust. President Barack Obama said he was concerned about the massive leak of sensitive documents, but the papers did not reveal any concerns that were not already part of the debate over the war.
But U.S. military and intelligence officials are worried about the impact on the military's human intelligence network built up over the past eight years inside Afghanistan and Pakistan.
An earlier investigation by the Army's criminal investigative division led to a prosecution in a separate case of leaks to the website. Bradley Manning, an Army intelligence specialist, has been charged with multiple counts of mishandling and leaking classified data, on suspicion he handed over to Wikileaks a classified 2007 video that shows a group of on unarmed men in Iraq walking down the street before being repeatedly shot by the Apache helicopters. The American gunners can be heard laughing and referring to the men as "dead bastards."
If convicted on all charges, Manning could be sentenced to a maximum 52 years in prison.

Fresh Al-Qaeda plot targets Eiffel tower
London: Fresh terror strike warnings have been sounded in Europe, particularly in France following new tip offs by the Saudi intelligence triggering authorities to put law enforcement agencies on high alert.
The warning of a potential attack by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian peninsula was received "in the last few hours", the French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux told a European television network.
"The threat is real", 'The Independent' reported quoting the French minister telling the RTL television in an interview.
Hortefeux said the warnings had been received from the Saudi intelligence and are the latest in the series of alerts that have put French security forces and intelligence agencies and other agencies in Europe on high alert.
"We must not underestimate or over estimate the threat," the minister said. "We are directly concerned."
France, Germany and UK are already on high alert following interrogations of a German Al-Qaeda member caught on Afghan-Pak border, that Al-Qaeda is planning terror strikes in Europe.
American Fox television had also reported that authorities had uncovered Al-Qaeda plot to hit world famous tourist attractions like Eiffel tower, Notre Dame Cathedral in France, Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and other hot spots.
France began boosting security last month at these sites, which were twice evacuated of tourists after false claims of an attack.
The US, Japanese as well as Spain have issued travel advisories to its citizens living or travelling in Europe to take precautions, following reports that terrorists may be plotting attacks on a European city, possibly a shooting spree similar to the deadly 2008 attacks in Mumbai in India.

“Indian officials spoke of knowing roughly how many nuclear bombs the Pakistanis possessed, from which they calculated that a doomsday nuclear volley would kill 300 [million] to 500 million Indians while annihilating all 120 million Pakistanis. The Indians would thus claim ‘victory’,” Branch has quoted Clinton as saying.
New Delhi is likely to be furious with the observation, which portrays it as a government willing to play fast and loose with its citizens lives to notch up a bizarre win against Pakistan.
Clinton had slapped sanctions on India and Pakistan over the tit-for-tat nuclear tests in 1998. His successor George Bush lifted those sanctions after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks as a reward, particularly for Pakistan, for offering to support Washington’s pursuit of Osama bin Laden.
Branch’s 700-page book is the result of his access to Clinton, in 79 sessions, during the two terms of his presidency from 1993 to 2001.
In an interview with USA Today, Branch said Clinton, who had read the manuscript, expressed concern about some details in the book. Branch said he believed Clinton “was nervous” about the book’s publication but had not asked for changes.
The Internet is abuzz with a smashed Boris Yeltsin anecdote in the book. Clinton recalled getting a security alert in 1995 that the secret service had found a whisky-tanked Yeltsin, in his underwear, teetering outside Blair House on Pennsylvania Avenue and trying to hail a taxi.
A longtime-friend, Branch quizzes Clinton on his political passions, his marriage and picks at the scabs of the Monica Lewinsky affair. One night in August 1999, six months after Clinton had survived the Senate impeachment trial, Clinton told Branch the Lewinsky affair began because “I cracked; I just cracked.”
